The strongest among you can’t overpower me.
The most brilliant among you can’t outsmart me.
I pull, ceaselessly, second-by-second, decade-by-decade, and century-by-century. My pace never changes. Resistance is futile. Your worst day and your best day are always followed by another day. I see to it. Still and always tomorrow comes.
You live for a hundred years, if you’re lucky. You are born and everything is promise. You see, hear, touch, taste, and smell what is. But you sense there is more. You live, learn, suffer, and deduce. Eons of wisdom consolidate in your understanding. Science and philosophy converge to comprehension that you are the first to know. You are the pinnacle! The end of history!
So you think.
Others misperceive. They are flawed. The younger won’t believe. They challenge. They must be led, but they won’t follow. Why, oh why, must they relive the pain? Their path is askew. Your barriers are broken. Your order is forfeited. They invite apocalypse. It will never work, you know, but you can’t change them.
So, you tire. You withdraw. And then you die.
And there is evening, and there is morning – a new day.
You are not the first.
You are not the last.
I am always. I hold truths unknowable to you. Wisdom is doing your best for me. Seek me. Plan for me. But be humble. Arrogance is evil’s cousin. Do no harm with what you think you know. Certainty is not yours. It is an illusion. I outlive all falsehoods.
Come with me as you must. Bring goodwill. Celebrate while we are together! Live! Prosper! Multiply!
Have faith in me. Forever yours,
The Future
This is a thougjt provoking, even disturbing poem.
